This studio programs a new campus for the Akilah Institute, a non-profit women’s college in Rwanda. After an extensive research on the use of yards in indigenous African architecture, this project aims to create a university building that not only fulfils the required programmatic needs, but also offers public spaces for the education of the whole community.
The new university is conceived as the combination of three distinct typologies and forms: a planted yard with circular rammed earth volumes that promote public gatherings; an uninterrupted curved concrete slab that is used for the outdoor activities; and a monolithic brick volume that contains the classrooms.
