Duopolis, or Survivors in a Bipolar City
Duopolis, or Survivors in a Bipolar City
The “Duopolis” is not a design proposal, nor a theoretical research. It is an imaginary, and at the same time potentially realistic, visualised narrative. The story takes place in a city and could happen in the present, in the future or the past. The purpose of the project is the exploration of how the value of architectural objects changes, depending on people’s habits and needs in each context.
Having as starting point a pandemic, which, as Yuval Harari mentions, it presses the fast-forward button on history, the story describes the social divisions that are shaped, and the way with which they are reflected in architecture and the city. Architecture has the power to shape, and to simultaneously reflect peoples’ actions and hopes, becoming a tool and a mirror of its sociopolitical context.
Apart from the main narrative, three imaginary citizens describe their everyday lives and thoughts. In addition, illustrations capture the ambience of the city and the rhythm of its inhabitants’ lives, enriching, rather than just visualizing, the course of the story.
